TOUCHDOWN AT GOAL LINE PYLON (2-11-2, 4-2-4-e)

2-11-2: "... The goal line plane extends beyond the sidelines (Exception: Rule 4-2-4-e)."

4-2-4-e: "When a ball carrier dives or jumps toward the sideline and is airborne as he crosses the sideline, forward progress is determined by the position of the ball as it crosses the sideline."

PLAY (Assume that A84 is the ball carrier)
RULING

A84 is running down the sideline when he becomes airborne over the sideline as a result of contact by a defender. The ball crosses the sideline on B's six inch line. A84 extends the ball such that the ball crosses the plane of the goal line extended before A84 is declared out of bounds.

Touchdown. A84 did not dive or jump to become airborne. The action by A84 is not voluntary. If A84 jumped prior to being contacted by a defender, it would be A's ball on B's six inch line. [See 2009 NCAA Bulletin #3, Play 10]

A84 runs into B's end zone holding the ball such that the ball crosses the plane of the goal line extended.

Touchdown. The ball became dead when the ball broke the plane of the goal line extended.

Just prior to A84's foot hitting the pylon, A84 is holding the ball such that the ball crosses the plane of the goal line extended.

Touchdown. The ball became dead when the ball broke the plane of the goal line extended. The ball was dead when A84's foot hit the pylon.

When A84's foot hits the pylon, A84 is holding the ball over B's six inch line.

A's ball on B's six inch line. The dead ball spot is the most forward point of the ball when the ball is declared dead. [4-2-4-d]

A84's left foot is inbounds when he extends the ball such that the ball crosses the plane of the goal line exended before A84's right foot hits the ground out of bounds.
